Concert For The Americas

Altos De Chavon Amphitheater, La Romana, Dominican Republic

The ‘Concert for the Americas’ took place on Saturday August the 20th 1982 in Altos de Chavón’s 5,000-seater open-air amphitheater with performers Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Heart and Santana

The concert was opened by Frank Sinatra with Buddy Rich, who together performed a set of no less than 19 songs, including Sinatra classics such as; “Strangers in The Night”, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, “I Get a Kick Out of You” and ended with the “Theme From New York, New York.”

Recorded for television at the Altos De Chavón Amphitheatre in La Romana, the Dominican Republic, this 90-minute epic concert features songs such as “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and Sinatra’s legendary “Theme from New York, New York.” The performance includes the legendary Buddy Rich on drums and a special guest appearance by guitarist Tony Mottola on a memorable rendition of “Send in The Clowns.”

Charles Bluhdorn, whose Gulf+Western owned both Altos de Chavón and Paramount Pictures, had Paramount record the concert so it could be rebroadcast worldwide. The concert was played on Showtime and featured a Grucci Fireworks grand finale. The video recordings of the Frank Sinatra and Buddy Rich set, and Heart’s performance were later released commercially.
